CSV Chart Explorer

Load a CSV and start with a chart picked for your columns, then switch chart types, group, filter and aggregate until the picture answers your question. No sign-up, no upload.

How to build a chart

  1. Paste CSV text, open a file, or press Try sample data to load a small set of shop orders.
  2. Press Load data. The explorer reads the column types and draws a first chart: a line over time if there is a date and a number, a bar chart if there is a category and a number, a scatter plot for two numbers, or a histogram for one.
  3. Choose another chart type, the columns for each axis and how values are combined.
  4. Add filters to focus on part of the data, and use sorting and top N to tidy the result.
  5. Download the chart as a PNG, or the table under it as CSV.

Choosing a chart type

  • Bar compares a value across categories. Add a Colour by column and each bar is split into stacked segments.
  • Grouped bar places the segments side by side, which makes it easier to compare groups directly.
  • Line and Area show change along an ordered axis such as dates or years.
  • Scatter plots one number against another, one point per row, and reports the correlation coefficient r. Large files are thinned to an even sample of 5,000 points.
  • Histogram splits one numeric column into equal ranges and counts the rows in each, showing the shape of the distribution.
  • Pie and Doughnut show parts of a whole. They work best with a handful of categories.

Aggregation, grouping and filters

Rows that share the same X value are combined into one point or bar. Count simply counts rows, while Sum, Average, Minimum and Maximum work on the numeric column chosen as the value. The ten most frequent values of the Colour by column each get their own colour; anything rarer is collected under Other.

Filters keep only the rows that match every condition. Text comparisons ignore upper and lower case, and the greater-than and less-than conditions compare numbers and dates by value rather than alphabetically. The table below the chart always shows the exact numbers that were drawn.

Colours in light and dark mode

Chart colours follow the site theme. The first two series use the theme's primary and accent colours and the rest come from a fixed palette of mid-tone colours chosen to stay readable on both light and dark backgrounds. Switch your system theme and the chart redraws to match.

Frequently asked questions

Does my data leave my computer?

No. The CSV is parsed and charted inside your browser tab. There is no upload step, so the explorer is fine to use with private or internal data.

Why is my chart showing only some categories?

The Show top N setting keeps the biggest categories so the chart stays readable; it starts at 20. Set it to 0 to show every category, up to 500. The note under the chart tells you how many categories were left out.

Why are some rows skipped?

When you sum, average or take the minimum or maximum of a column, rows where that column is empty or not a number cannot be included. Scatter plots and histograms skip such rows as well. The note under the chart reports how many were skipped.

How do I chart values over time?

Pick a line or area chart and choose a date column for the X axis. A Group dates by option appears so you can roll daily records up into months, quarters or years, which is usually much easier to read.

Can I use the chart in a report?

Yes. Download PNG saves the chart as an image with a solid background that matches the current light or dark theme. Table as CSV saves the aggregated numbers behind the chart, so you can paste them into a spreadsheet or document.
