ConvertCSV is a free set of online tools for converting, cleaning and reshaping tabular data. Paste a table in, pick a format, get the result back. No account, no upload queue, no watermark.

Who we are

We are a small independent team of software developers who spend most of our working lives moving data between systems that disagree about how it should be formatted. CSV that is really tab-separated. JSON that needs to become a SQL insert. An Excel export with quoted commas inside the cells. A fixed-width report from a mainframe that someone still needs as a spreadsheet.

We built ConvertCSV because we were tired of pasting confidential spreadsheets into anonymous websites just to change a delimiter. The site is the tool we wanted to exist: fast, honest about what it does with your data, and free to use.

What the site does today

We would rather ship three tools that work properly than forty that half-work, so the site is being opened up one converter at a time. These are finished and live right now:

  • CSV to JSON — flat or nested output, with control over how keys are named and how blank cells are treated.
  • JSON to CSV — flattens nested objects and arrays into columns.
  • CSV to CSV — change the delimiter, the quoting, the line endings or the column order; the workhorse for cleaning up an awkward export.

The conversion engine underneath already reads and writes a good deal more than that — XML, YAML, SQL, HTML tables, Markdown tables, GeoJSON, fixed-width text — plus transposing, sorting, field selection and template-based test-data generation. Those are being connected to their own tool pages in turn. Where a tool is listed in the menu but not finished, the page says so plainly instead of pretending otherwise.

Where your data goes

This matters more than anything else on this page, so we will be precise about it.

The conversion runs in your browser. The engine is JavaScript that your browser downloads once and then executes locally. When you paste data into the input box or choose a file from your computer, that data is not sent to our server. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tools will still work. Files are never stored, never logged, and never seen by us.

There is exactly one exception, and it is the “convert from a web address” field. A browser is not allowed to read a page from another domain, so that request has to travel through our server. Our server fetches the URL you gave it, hands the content straight back to your browser, and keeps no copy.

How the site is built

ConvertCSV is made of three parts. The core (@ccsv/core) is a dependency-free TypeScript library holding all of the reading and writing logic, so the same conversion code runs in the browser, in a background worker and on a server without being rewritten. The interface is a Next.js application that builds each tool screen from a shared catalogue. The backend is a small NestJS service whose only jobs are fetching remote URLs on your behalf and offering an API for developers.

Some details we are quietly proud of:

  • The CSV reader is a state machine, so it handles nested quotes, newlines inside a cell and all three line-ending conventions correctly rather than approximately.
  • The delimiter is detected by measuring how consistent the column count stays across rows, not by counting characters — so a comma inside a sentence does not fool it.
  • The template-based data generator never calls eval, so a template from an untrusted source cannot execute arbitrary code.

How we pay for it

ConvertCSV is free and has no paid tier. The server, the domain and the time spent maintaining the tools are paid for by advertising.

We use Google AdSense and other third-party advertising vendors. These vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and to other sites on the internet. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites.

You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google’s Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendors’ use of cookies at aboutads.info.

Advertising never touches your data. Ad scripts cannot read the contents of the conversion boxes, we do not sell or share anything you paste into the site, and no advertiser has any influence over how a tool behaves.

Contact us

Bug reports, feature requests, a file format we should support, business enquiries — all welcome at the same address:

Email: support@regulad.com

We aim to reply within two business days. If you are reporting a conversion that produced the wrong result, a few sample rows that reproduce it will get it fixed far faster.
